After all, you don't need to be a kitchen prince or princess in order to stun your family and friends with some tasty treats. No. I will offer you some nifty shortcuts which are guaranteed to help you be the host(ess) with the most(ess)!
Let's start with a bit of a history lesson. After all, knowing some interesting facts about the food you serve will certainly show you off as not only handy in the kitchen, but smart as well! The origins of donuts, or 'doughnuts' is somewhat disputed. There are many roads which lead to proverbial Rome and culinary historians may each walk a different path.
One such path, and perhaps the most well-known, is that in the 19th century, it was Dutch settlers who brought along their traditions. Amongst these traditions was a sweetened, fried cake called 'oliebol' - which translated from Dutch literally means 'oil ball'. This was made from sweetened bread dough, rolled into balls and thrown into frying oil until they floated to the surface. A sure sign the pastry was cooked and ready. Yes, even in the 19th century, easy baking was applied!
Later on, Hanson Gregory claimed he invented the ring-shaped doughnut. However, adding a hole means no filling. And let's face it; doughnuts with a filling are often so much tastier!
But why the alteration in name? Doughnut or donut? Another little fact perhaps worthwhile of knowing. You see, in the beginning of the 20th century, a man named George W. Peck wrote a book named 'Peck's Bad Boy and his Pa' which holds the quote; "Pa said he guessed he hadn't got much appetite, and he would just drink a cup of coffee and eat a donut." And did you know that this links in with one of the earliest recorded complaints about the decline of spelling by Bailey Millard in the Los Angeles Times?
Another take on the abbreviation of the word 'doughnut' comes from the New York-based Display Doughnut Machine Corporation. This 'easier' version of the word would presumably make it easier for 'foreigners' to pronounce. Donut or doughnut, it doesn't really matter. What does matter is that this easy to bake easy to make treat not only tastes delicious, but can be ready in little to no timing. Just follow the following recipe and you can't go wrong!
Ingredients(Serves up to six.):
1) Sugar for rolling
2) 22g caster sugar
3) 100ml milk
4) 225g of plain white bread flour
5) 15g yeast
6) 22gr of butter
7) 150g of jam of any kind. If you like your donuts sweet and fruity, add more jam!
8) Some oil for frying
How to prepare your donuts:
1) Pour the flour, milk, butter, sugar and yeast in a bowl and mix them all together for a few minutes until the batter shows as an even, smooth paste. Make sure there are no lumps.
2) Leave the mixture in a room temperature environment, covered with a cloth, to rise. It should swell to twice its original size. Hit the dough to knock it back and proceed to roll it into balls.
3) Leave the balls to rise again until they have gotten about a quarter bigger than they were when you first rolled them.
4) Heat up your donut maker and where applicable grease slightly if the instructions mention it and place the dough balls in the individual holders.
5) Roll the finished donuts in sugar. Heat the jam in a saucepan or microwave to the point where it is liquid but not piping hot. Put into a piping bag or bottle, and then fill the donuts with about a tbsp. of jam each (depending on the size you make them in). Serve.
You can also use custard or for instance chocolate spread instead of jam, they work just as well. It's all down to personal taste. And so, you are ready to enjoy your first of many batches of easy to bake easy to make donuts! Orâ€¦ was that doughnutâ€¦?
